Our classes
We run classes for boys and girls aged 5 years and over. Girls and boys are mixed in the Red level. If you have done gymnastics before, or if you haven’t, we will have a class to suit you. Most classes run after school, with some on Saturday mornings. Classes are usually 1 hour long and once a week. Older or more advanced gymnasts may have 1½ or 2 hour sessions or two sessions per week. All classes at ESGC are taught by NZ Gymnastics Association qualified and affiliated coaches. We aim for a 1:8 coach - gymnasts ratio.
Core skills introduction
Early gymnastic instruction at ESGC is introduced in our Playgym and "Rainbow” classes. It is based on 7 dominant movement patterns: swing, statics, locomotion, spring, landing, rotations and manipulative skills.
We're proud to have introduced a new and unique RAINBOW program which is based on progression through the levels. The new program is based on fundamental gymnastic skills, progression and it's pre-requisites of strength and flexibility. It has nine levels of difficulty, named after colours of the rainbow, each with approximately 15 skills per level. Generally gymnasts start in the Red class, in which they learn basic gymnastic skills and get to experience the new enviroment, gym rules and procedures. After Red level they progress to Orange, then Yellow and on, aiming for very last one which is Gold. Gymnasts move to the next level when all the skills have been acheived and assessed at the formal test. This test usually takes place in term 2 and term 4. Gymnasts can not progress without passing this test. Only selected gymnasts can sit the test.
Competitions
Selected gymnasts will be invited to compete at some competitions such as; Introductory, Basic Skills, Tumbling and Mini Tramp competitions run by ESGC. This is a very important connection for our club and it is highly encouraged that all invited gymnasts from our club participate.
